Fishing Top Masons

Fishing Top Masons

This large (27″ x 21″) watercolour is perhaps the last painting of the Lune.  Unlike most watercolours of this vintage, the date and title are not written on the back of the frame but it was painted in the very late 1990s.  The actual date will be on the back of the mount.  It was exhibited once but was marked “Not for Sale” as several friends and family members had insisted on pre-emptive rights to buy it!  Until my mother left Caton after my father’ death, this painting was hung in the living room above the fireplace.
Known as Top Masons it depicts a salmon fly fisherman in the foreground fishing the Top Masons pool on the Lune near Caton.  He is clearly intending to work his way down to Masons Sway (under the willow trees).  Two other fishermen are shown in Bottom Masons, one fishing and one sat on the bank.  The artist’s point of view is round the corner just onto Railway Bank.
The painting is signed clearly in the bottom right hand corner.  The painting is presented in its orginal double mount and frame as orginally framed by my parents.
