Still life flower

I’m not aware that this small oil has ever had a name.  It depicts a pink flower – although I’m not certain quite what type.  The oil is painted on hardboard (the old brown stuff made of compressed wood chip) and at 9.5″ by 6″ is unusually small for one of Terry’s oils.  It is also varnished in a very shiny varnish – hence the poor quality of the image as it reflects light strongly.  It has been reframed (by the artist – or at least the frame (1990s) is newer than the picture as it is possible it had not been framed previously.

It is signed in the lower right corner but the date is also unclear.  I don’t recall it being painted and it is on hardboard so that puts and absolute upper date on it of about 1970.  My guess is 1950s rather than 19060s, but that attribution is uncertain.

Little Langdale

The vast majority of Terry’s work was intended for sale – an artist has to eat and he took great pleasure in having his work appreciated by others.  Occasionally he would conspire to hang on to a picture – without of course admitting that was what he was doing.  This oil is one of those and a paiting I therefore grew up with.  It is a very rare example of an oil of the Lake District.  Most of his paintings of the Lakes are watercolours and some pastels.

PS Apologies for the delay in adding more pictures.  As some of you know I was touring Laos.  I’m now back online.  I don’t have photo editing software at present so I’ll go back over the next batch of photos again sometime soon!  I’ll also try to retake the photo which doesn’t have light bloom.

Horse and Rider

(The photograph has too much illumination from the right.  When conditions are better, I’ll take a new photograph and replace this one.)

Horse and Rider is a large (48″ x 33″) oil from canvas from about 1970.  It is presented in its original frame of brown canvas slip inside silver gilt.  The choice of (what is a relatively expensive) frame illustrates the importance of this work, as does its size.

There are few records of what was exhibited, when; I believe this painting was exhibited once at a Lancaster Art Group exhibition.  While hunting through Terry’s scrapbooks, I cam across a couple of pages clipped from the Radio Times.  A quick photo of one of the images is shown to the right.  It’s quite different to the oil painting itself, but an obvious question is whether this was one of the inspirations for the pianting.  (It’s worth noting that the Radio Times was printed in black and white in those days.)  So far I have not managed to find the date for the edition from which this was clipped.

Lanacaster from Lune

Lanacaster from Lune

A relatively early oil painting of Lancaster from the banks of the Lune.  It is believed to date from the mid 50’s and is about 2 feet in width.  It was presented as a gift by the artist and remains in a private collection.  NFS
